With spare and instantly recognizable style, his work has been presented in major venues for decades, from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1954) to the first retrospective for a living artist at the Hermitage (1991), from a gallery at the Vatican to two museums devoted solely to his work in Japan (the first in 1973).
