Carlos Alfonzo was a Cuban-American neo-expressionist who left Havana during the 1980 Mariel boatlift and became a key figure in Miami’s 1980s art scene. Critics often compare his symbol-rich, emotionally charged imagery to the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente. Alfonzo’s paintings and drawings are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.
