Van de Bovenkamp moved to New York City and became a part of the 10th street gallery co-op movement following his graduation from the University of Michigan in 1961.
In 1962, his first solo exhibit took place at the Little Gallery in Taos, New Mexico. The following year, Van de Bovenkamp developed sculptural ideas for the windows of Tiffany's on Fifth Avenue. Van de Bovenkamp began manufacturing limited edition fountains in a studio on Christopher Street in New York in 1967. He had fifteen assistants, including George Rhoads and Sybil and David Yurman. Together they produced more than five thousand fountains worldwide. Over the next ten years, Van de Bovenkamp exhibited his sculptures throughout the United States, including in New York City at New York University, Tiffany & Co., and Bryant Park; at Houston, Texas Contemporary Arts Museum; and at both the Stamford Museum and University of Connecticut.
His work has also been displayed in Italy, Lebanon, Venezuela, Switzerland, and Canada.
Van de Bovenkamp's works have been featured in ten museums, embassies, and sculpture center shows, as well as numerous universities, public gardens and institutes. Kevin Miller has been Van de Bovenkamp's assistant since 1995.
Condition
good, condition consistent with prolonged outdoor exhibition. Observed surface characteristics and material responses align with expected environmental exposure.
The work is a monumental hollow-cast bronze sculpture with an overall green patina. The surface exhibits uniform weathering patterns consistent with long-term outdoor display, including exposure to UV light, moisture, and atmospheric conditions.
Localized areas of oxidation are present throughout the sculpture, with more concentrated orange oxidation noted at the base. These conditions are consistent with natural patination processes and environmental exposure over time.
Three punctures are observed at the base, likely resulting from corrosion-related deterioration. These areas appear stable at the time of inspection and do not indicate active structural compromise.
All welds are intact and secure. There is no evidence of separation at the joints or seams. The structural integrity of the sculpture remains sound, with no visible instability.
The sculpture is firmly attached to its base, with no separation or movement observed between the sculpture and its mounting structure.
No artist signature or foundry mark was observed during the inspection.
No evidence of prior conservation or restoration treatment was observed.
Overall condition is consistent with a large-scale bronze sculpture maintained in an outdoor environment. Surface oxidation and patina variations are expected and do not detract from the structural integrity of the work.

11. Shipping/Pick-up/Storage: PBMA highly recommends that bidders obtain shipping quotes prior to bidding. If you would like to obtain a shipping quote prior to the auction, please contact PBMA by phone or email for a list of shippers, or contact your own shipper. PBMA provides shipping lists only as a service to its clients and any such list should not be considered an endorsement of any shipping company. Additionally, PBMA does not pack or ship items for insurance reasons. Final arrangements for shipping, and all costs associated with shipping, are the responsibility of the buyer. Any agreement for shipping is a contract between the buyer and the shipper; PBMA is not a party to any such contract and expressly disclaims any responsibility thereunder. No items will be released for shipping until PBMA receives payment in full and all payments have cleared. Thereafter, items may be picked up at PBMA's exhibition facility Monday through Friday from 10:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. by the winning bidders or their shippers. Please call PBMA the day before you intend to pick-up any item. If a shipper is picking up an item, please send PBMA an e-mail confirming the name of the shipper and the property to be released into the shipper's possession, and providing PBMA permission to release the property to your shipper. All winning lots must be picked up within thirty (30) business days following the close of the auction. After this time, each lot will become subject to storage fees of not less than $5 per day. After 180 days following the close of the auction, any lot which is not picked up will be deemed abandoned by the buyer, will become the property of PBMA and may be disposed of by PBMA, in any manner it chooses, without recourse.
