Rare lithographic "Divan Japonais" poster by French painter and lithographer Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). Printed by Ed. Ancourt, Paris circa 1905. This is the second version of this poster, printed after Lautrec's death. There are two variants from the 1893 original lithograph, this version is slightly larger and Yvette Gilbert's black gloves are extended to cover her arms, when in the older version, the gloves are shorter. Of all the female entertainers Lautrec celebrated in his posters, Jane Avril and Yvette Gilbert, were his favorite entertainers and close friends. Although Gilbert was the performer in the Divan Japonais cabaret, it is Avril that is the focal figure in what represents one of his most brilliant posters. Under her famous red hair topped with a pagoda hat and towering plume, her silhouetted figure dominates the front of the image and at her right is the distinguished founder of the Symbolist Revue, Edward Dujardin. This image demonstrates Lautrec's mastery of bold design and simplification of line and color, much like the Japanese woodcuts that he so admired. 24.5"h, 35"w
