Josef Albers was a German-born American artist, educator, and color theorist and one of the most influential figures of twentieth-century modernism. A student and later teacher at the Bauhaus, Albers immigrated to the United States in 1933, where he taught at Black Mountain College before becoming chairman of the Department of Design at Yale University.

He is best known for his iconic "Homage to the Square" series, begun in 1950, in which nested squares of carefully selected colors explore the ways neighboring hues alter visual perception. His groundbreaking 1963 publication "Interaction of Color" further established his lasting influence on modern art, design, and color theory. In 1971, Albers became the first living artist to receive a solo retrospective at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
