MacKendrick’s poetic still‑lifes bridge post‑war American realism and lyrical abstraction, inviting comparison to Janet Fish and Fairfield Porter; her legacy is documented in the Lilian MacKendrick papers (1930–1983) at the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American Art, which preserve her correspondence, diaries, and studio notes.
Mrs. Schleger and Vladimir Kagan had an enduring friendship. In the mid-late 1960s, she engaged him to decorate both her Central Park apartment and her Palm Beach penthouse. Her grandson recalls that she welcomed the designer as a houseguest in Palm Beach occasionally, something she did only for her closest friends and family. Several of the Kagan pieces offered in this auction were custom-made for the apartment, while the Schlegers’ art collection ranges from the 1960s to the 2000s.
