John Dickinson prototype chair, 1969. Provenance: Estate of Carlene Safdie, longtime friend and heir to Dickinson's rarest designs and personal collection. The consignor has provided the following text, based upon meetings with Ms. Safdie: "This chair of laminated wood, in exaggerated classical style, epitomizes Dickinson's love of form and fantasy. Lending his love of the ancient world with 20th Century style. The chair is carved to resemble upholstery, with hints of ancient Egypt, China and Greece, in its unique and sculptural design. Two of these chairs were made. The other identical chair remains in Mrs. Safdie's personal collection. The pair of chairs was never on view outside of the Cook House, in San Francisco, on Mr. Dickinson's property. Mrs. Safdie states that John had a deep affection for craftsmanship and carving. This prototype chair and its mate were too expensive to put into production. This form was used as the prototype for chairs he would do on commission that he would upholster. The chair he used for his piano, in the firehouse is in this form, covered in white Naugahyde." Palm Beach Modern Auctions would like to express its gratitude to Ms. Carlene Safdie for her assistance in writing the details of this listing.
