Pair of stone sculptures (can also serve as bookends) by Richard Mteki (b.1947). Mteki, now one of the most recognized of Shona sculptors, was discovered at an early age by Frank McEwen, the legendary curator of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe who encouraged Mteki to pursue art as a profession. Commissions have included a massive bird, the national symbol of the country, at Harare Stadium. Mixing traditional themes with modernist abstraction, his work has been exhibited in major venues and collected worldwide.
