"James" is based on hyper-realistic charcoal and graphite drawings Robert Longo created from a series of photographs taken between 1977 and 1983. Shot on the rooftop of his apartment building, the photographs featured friends and acquaintances, including Cindy Sherman and Larry Gagosian, dressed in business attire and reacting to objects Longo threw toward them. Their spontaneous and dramatic gestures became the foundation for a set of 60 drawings, later developed into the iconic lithograph series.
