Rare pair of slipper chairs by William 'Billy' Haines, en suite with the preceding lot. These slipper chairs are Haines' interpretation of the ancient Greek 'klismos.' He created three versions of the chair: this sleek open-back design, a second with a brass oval filling the negative space, and a third with small padded backrests in the upper portion of the negative space. After his successful career as a leading man in film ended in scandal in the mid-1930s, Billy Haines expanded the nascent interior design studio he had begun with partner Jimmie Shields and quickly became the favorite of Hollywood society. Blending Classical form with modernist purity, Haines' talent attracted clients such as Joan Crawford, George Cukor, Carole Lombard, and Gloria Swanson in the early days, continuing into the 1970s with Betsy Bloomingdale, Walter and Leonore Annenberg, and Ronald and Nancy Reagan, among others. 27" h, 22.5" w, 21.5" d
