The consignor has advised that he purchased this and another "Compression" sculpture (a signed work, sold in our 6.2.2018 auction, lot 223) from a gallery show in the south of France or Paris, sometime between 1981-83. He said that at the time, Baldaccini was not as well known, but he purchased the sculptures because he liked the apocalyptic look of the works. This lot is from the personal collection of an important Soho-New York gallery owner. The collection represents over 30 years in business and his passion for 20th century design.
